A Verse

John 19:26-27

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

A Comment

“The disciple whom he loved.” What a title, right? As John wrote his gospel account of the life of Jesus, he recounts these moments near the cross. As Jesus was preparing to die and rise again, he was also preparing for his mother to be cared for by his disciple, John.

John knew that Jesus loved him. The title was not intended to show some superiority over the other disciples but rather to place the emphasis of his identity on Jesus’ love for him.

As I reflected on this verse this morning, I couldn’t help but think of how peace and hope must’ve filled John’s heart to know that Jesus loved him. Yet, this is not only true of John; it is true of all disciples of Jesus. If you are a follower of Jesus and have placed your hope in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then you also are a disciple whom Jesus loves.

What a wonderful thought! He loves you! He has demonstrated this love for you by dying the death that you deserved to die and granting you the life that he alone earned through his own life of obedience to the Father.

If you are in Christ this morning, then you are loved by Jesus! And if you are not in Christ this morning, then you are invited to come and experience his great love and mercy to you this morning.

A Prayer

Will you pray with me this morning?

A Blessing

The God of peace be with you all. Amen.
