Mercy as a Mark of God's Children

A Verse, A Comment, A Prayer, A Blessing (5/15/2023)

A Verse

Luke 6:36

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

A Comment

In Luke 6:27-36, Jesus is teaching his disciples about loving their enemies. This is one of Jesus’ most well-known teachings, but it is also one that Christians tend to struggle to learn and obey. Let’s face it, loving our enemies is hard. In fact, I would say it is impossible without a proper understanding and experience of God’s love for us in Christ.

We do not naturally love those that hate us. Yet, this is exactly what we find in God’s love for us. As Romans 5 states, God loved us when we were his enemies. Instead of wiping out his enemies, God chose to love them. He chose mercy. And those of us who have received and experienced such mercy have become his children. And now, as his children, we have been called to be merciful just as our Father is merciful.

Our world will not really understand such an approach to our enemies. To the world, mercy looks weak. But for our enemies who receive mercy from us, it points them to Christ. And this is our aim. We want to glorify what God has done in Christ. And one of the ways we do this is by showing others a glimpse of what his great mercy is like.

I encourage you to reflect on this truth today, and join me in praying that God would fill us with the strength and faith that we need to be merciful, just as our Father is merciful.

A Prayer

Would you pray with me?

A Blessing

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
